Bird Watching in Sri Lanka is popular excursion among many tourists. Hence, Sri Lanka is often referred to as a Birdwatcher's Paradise, because of large colonies of birds are easily visible. Also most species are indigenous. Species ranging from delicate bee eaters and colorful kingfishers to majestic water birds and stunning peacocks, are among them for instance. Further, due to the favorable climatic conditions you will see these birds throughout the year.

In Sri Lanka we have recorded 501 species (432 species and sub species) with 33 endemics. Furthermore, of this total number 143 species are shared with India, while 81 have evolved into endemic subspecies. This indicates the long isolation of the island. Most of endemic birds sighted at Sinharaja rain forest, Horton Plains, Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, Kitulgala, Udawattekele and Knuckles range. Kumana, Bundala, Wilpattu National Parks, Mannar lagoon and also Jaffna peninsula are probably some of the best places to spot migrant species.
